Add elevation to a GPX file
Routes drawn by hand or exported from some apps have no altitude, and GPS altitudes are often noisy. GPXTools fills them in from a high-resolution terrain model.
How to do it
- 1 Open the GPX file in GPXTools.
- 2 Open the Request elevation data tool.
- 3 Apply it and export the file with the new elevations.
What you get
- Terrain model with up to a few metres of resolution in mountain areas
- Realistic climb and descent, without GPS noise
- Elevation profile with slope colours
- Works on the whole file or on a selection
Frequently asked questions
Why is the climb of my GPS different from the one on GPXTools?
Barometric and GPS altitudes drift and add small ups and downs; a terrain model gives a more stable profile, especially on routes drawn on the map.
Are my files uploaded to a server?
No. Editing happens in your browser and the files stay on your device. They only go to the cloud if you add them to a shared project.
Is it free? Do I need to install anything?
Yes, GPXTools is free and has no ads. It works in the browser on a computer, tablet or phone, without installing anything, and it can also be installed as an app.
