Slope angle map and avalanche terrain

Slab avalanches mostly release on slopes of 30° or more. GPXTools colours the slope of the terrain anywhere and tells you which stretches of your route cross or pass below steep ground.

How to do it

  1. 1 Open GPXTools and turn on the slope layer (Avalanches and winter tool, or the layer menu).
  2. 2 Draw or open your winter route and press Analyse the route.
  3. 3 Check the stretches, the day’s bulletin and the snow and weather before you go.

What you get

  • Slope classes 25–30°, 30–35°, 35–40°, 40–45° and over 45°
  • Stretches on steep slopes or exposed to slopes above
  • Official avalanche bulletins: ICGC, Aran, Andorra, France, the Alps…
  • New snow, freezing level, wind and daylight

Frequently asked questions

Where does the slope map come from?

It is computed from a terrain model (Mapterhorn), with a resolution of a few metres in many mountain areas, so it works in the Pyrenees, the Alps and everywhere else.

Does it replace the avalanche bulletin?

No. It is a planning aid: always check the official bulletin, carry a transceiver, shovel and probe, and decide on the ground.

Is it free? Do I need to install anything?

Yes, GPXTools is free and has no ads. It works in the browser on a computer, tablet or phone, without installing anything, and it can also be installed as an app.
